I held a hummingbird! I was busy polishing/editing A Rose for the Beast for release and something exciting happened over Labor Day. On my break, my son had just finished cutting the lawn when he popped his head out of the garage to tell me that a hummingbird was stuck in the garage.
Of course I ran to the garage and sure enough, fluttering around the back garage window was a little sweet hummingbird. I felt sorry for the little thing. At first, I tried to see if it would flutter out the side door I had Matthew open, but it panicked and dropped to the windowsill. When I started to reach for it, the hummingbird opened its long beak wide and let out a cry of despair. It broke my heart. I gently picked it up and softly spoke to it, but I'm sure none of it reassured the traumatized creature. Matthew followed me outside and began to video as I released it. We hoped it would be able to fly. It flew so quickly from my hand we hardly captured it on video. I was elated that we had helped it back to freedom. It was an amazing experience.
